Fashion Care Tips

We all know how it is, we look and look, and if we’re lucky, we find The Perfect Thing . Whether it’s a beautifully flattering cashmere cardigan, a smooth, perfectly-appropriate jersey dress, or a pair of rich, dark-wash jeans that are to-die!

So, because this "Perfect Thing" is so particularly perfect, we invest in it knowing it makes us look our best. Sometimes, to be smart, we even buy two! Now. How do we KEEP that lovely item looking new?

We’ve all had those fashion disasters: a favorite sweater shrunken and felted in the wash, or stretched out beyond recognition. The tailored silk blouse that once looked so polished now hangs funny, or the dark wash jeans that are so faded they look more like mom jeans! There are ways to prevent these tragedies.

Taking care of your fashion treasures is key. If you love something, follow these guidelines below to help keep it looking brand new for months and years after you bring it home!

GENERAL FABRIC CARE GUIDELINES

Cotton :

Something that is 100% cotton is usually washable AND dryable, meaning you can run it through both the washing machine and the dryer. HOWEVER, as in all things fabric, ERR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION.

Note on using dryer: FOR TOPS, cotton or otherwise (even ones that say “tumble dry”) I RARELY, IF EVER, USE MY DRYER.

The dryer, for all it makes the softest, warmest, most delicious-smelling piles of clean laundry, also breaks down fibers. It just does. That’s part of why the clothes are so wonderfully soft! So….if you want your favorite tee shirts to stay fresh, shapely and bright, do not put them in the dryer. I hang all of my favorite tees on a laundry rack next to the washer, taking a moment to lovingly straighten any wrinkles out while I’m at it, knowing that they’ll look all the better when they’ve air dried if I shape them now. You can look at this like it’s an extra-step, or you can see it as a chance to easily make sure your beautiful tees that you searched out and love look fabulous every time you wear them! So, cotton or not, my personal advice is to HANG DRY, LINE DRY, OR DRY FLAT EVERY TOP, INCLUDING TEES. However, if you must wash your top in the machine, and it is safe to do so, follow these suggestions for the least impactful method:

For machine-wash cotton tops I use a gentle cycle and cold water. This is the least damaging kind of wash cycle and will use less energy if you’re not using hot water. Less shrinkage, too!
Wash light cottons (such as tees) separately from heavy cottons (such as jeans). This will cut down on the damage to lighter fibers. Wash cotton towels separate from jeans, as well. The fluff in the towels coats the denim and needs to be removed later.
Besides coming in many familiar forms, such as tee shirts and denim, cotton is also commonly found in twill, corduroy, and seersucker. Watch your labels to best decide on how to wash and dry. When in doubt, wash cotton items on gentle, cold cycle and hang to dry.

On bleaching white cotton tees and tops:

I like to bleach my white cottons every season to freshen them, not just for stain removal. To do so I get a 1 quart container and fill it with cold water. I add about ½ c of bleach to the water. I start the cold water cycle of the washer WITHOUT PUTTING THE CLOTHES IN YET, and wait for it to fill. When there is a good amount of water in the machine, I add the bleach solution and allow it to dilute. Then I add the clothes and let the machine finish its cycle. When they come out! Get out your shades! They’re white and bright!

On washing and drying jeans:

I always wash my jeans zipped up and inside out. This helps keep the dye from washing out, keeping them darker longer.
I usually hang dry my jeans, but if I like a pair to fit snugly I will throw them in the dryer, making sure they are still zipped up and inside out.

It is possible to use the dryer sparingly on tops when you need to air out wrinkles. Usually this works best on polyester tops, or some rayon, or linen blends, but read the label on the tops carefully, and use as cool a dryer as possible for this operation.

Rayon :

Rayon is a beautiful, silky fabric that drapes well. Its fibers are weaker than that of cotton and it needs to be handled carefully.

Check the label to see if it is washable rayon. If it is, wash it on a gentle, cool cycle and remove promptly from washer.
Roll in a dry towel to remove excess moisture, then hang or lie flat, smoothing wrinkles.
When necessary, use a light steam iron on the inside of the garment. It takes some work, but rayon is such an elegant, comfortable fabric it’s worth it!

Linen:

Linen is a wonderful, natural fabric that is hangs well and keeps you cool when you wear it! It is absorbent which means it wicks moisture and also absorbs more moisture when being washed.

If you have washable linen (check label) wash it in a loosely-packed washer on a gentle cycle at recommended heat setting. If in doubt, use cold.
Line dry linen to keep color bright or whites fresh.
Tumble dry low if you prefer a softer linen as this fabric gets softer with every wash and dry.
Linen often needs ironing, as it wrinkles easily. Ironing on the outside of the fabric will produce a sheen, sometimes desirable, sometimes not. If you don’t prefer a sheen, iron on the inside of the fabric. Use a steam setting.

Washable Silk :

Washable or not, I hand-wash all my silk garments.

However, using a gentle or hand-wash cycle on your machine should be fine for washable silk. Only pre-washed silk is washable, so check the label. If it isn’t, then hand wash in cool water and with mild soap.
Once again check the label to make sure silk is pre-washed in order to use the dryer. If so, use a cool setting. If not, lay flat to dry, shaping garment and smoothing to cut down on wrinkles.
When necessary, use a cool iron on a cool setting for silk.

Nylon :

Nylon is a wonderful, elastic fabric that is lightweight and resists shrinkage.

When washing nylon in general use a warm or cold setting, or hand wash. Check label for specific washing instructions however, sometimes a blend can mean a different approach.
Tumble dry low with setting on permanent press that has a cool-down. Remove promptly to prevent wrinkling. Or, drip dry or lay flat!
Ironing nylon is not recommended, but if absolutely necessary use very low setting.

Cashmere:

I don’t wash cashmere in the machine. Even if the label says you can, I don’t. The fibers are so soft that my sweaters loose their shape immediately and the nap of the sweater is too impacted by a machine.

I always hand wash my cashmere garments with mild soap and cool water.
Gently roll garments in a dry towel when washed, to absorb excess moisture.
When garment is ready, spread flat to dry, shaping as you go. I like to fluff the piece once or twice during the drying process to allow air to circulate beneath it, maybe flip it over once and re-smooth.
Cashmere pills. For all that it is the softest, most luxurious knit we all love, it pills like crazy and can look like a cheap acrylic sweater if you’re not careful! For this reason I bought an amazing little gadget called a “de-piller”. They are also called “Fuzz-Busters”. It is a small, handheld shaver that you run over the sweater and it shaves off the pills! It cost under 8 dollars at a fabric store, and is worth its weight in gold. Put on a movie, get out your Fuzz-Buster and work over that cashmere sweater. It’s actually kind of meditative! And your sweater (and you in it) will look BRAND NEW when you’re finished!

Washable Wool

Check label for washing instructions. I usually hand-wash all of my wools, or get them dry cleaned, but you can use the “hand-wash” or gentle cycle on your washing machine. Easy care wool knits can be washed on the wool cycle with warm or cool water. Dry cleaning once a year is usually enough.
Drying wool is the same as with cashmere: roll gently in a towel to absorb excess moisture, then lay flat to dry, smoothing and shaping garment to lay flat.
Use the wool or steam setting on the iron to remove wrinkles. Also, hanging wool garments in a steamy bathroom will usually remove major wrinkles.

*NOTE ON STORING GARMENTS:

Choosing how you store your favorite garments is important to how they look when you go to wear them! As a general rule, I like to hang most of my garments. Exceptions are sweaters that are too loosely knit or too heavy and need to be folded to prevent stretching. These I usually fold lightly and airly, and store them in canvas cubbies in my closet. I never have more than two or three piled on each other at once so they don’t get squished. I fold my denim crisply and squarely and keep in drawers.

For those items that are hung up, I make sure the closet is not so densely packed things are getting wrinkled and crushed. Store your out-of-season garments in a different closet. I like to hang blouses next to their coordinating cardigans. I hang all my jackets and outerwear to the side so they don’t crush any lighter top between them.

I have a small hand-held steamer that is a godsend for quick wrinkle control!

STAIN TREATMENT:

Stains happen. When they do

treat them promptly, a fresh stain is much easier to remove than an old one. If the stain is on a non-washable fabric take it to the dry cleaner immediately.
If using a stain removal product, read instructions carefully and test the product on an inside flap of fabric before using. To test, apply product, wait 2-5 minutes and if color hasn’t faded, then it’s safe to use on the garment.
When cleaning a stain, place stained area face down on a clean paper towel or white cloth. Apply stain remover the the underside of the stain, forcing stain off the fabric surface instead of through it.
Do not mix stain removal products. Some mixtures, such as ammonia and chlorine bleach, can produce noxious and dangerous fumes!

DRY CLEANING

Sometimes it is just not possible to wash or dry a garment. Down coats, wool suits, and some rayons and silks just can’t get wet. I usually have my winter coats dry cleaned once or twice a year.

If you try these fabric care tips, you will see how much longer your beautiful garments will look like new! It is a great feeling to pull out your favorite tee shirt the next year and have it look as fresh as your new ones! Remember, when in doubt, hand wash and lay flat to dry!

Clean Out Your Closet, Clean Out Your Life!

Our poor closets. They are the last places to be cleaned, are often filled with leftovers from other places, and are forever criticized for not being big enough. Given their “catch-all” tendencies, and lowly rank on the to-do list, it’s no wonder that they often become so full that just opening the door can feel overwhelming! How can we make any choices about using what’s inside the closet, if we can’t even get to it? Getting dressed can become a terrible struggle, a Herculean task! And certainly starts the day with a tone of frustration. This is no way to start our day! We deserve to begin every day with a positive vibe, even a joyful one! This opening note will set the tone for the entire day, and attract more and more vibes of a similar kind. Shouldn’t we then strive to make the first one a good one? With this in mind, I believe that moving “cleaning your closet” to the number one position on your to-do list can be a way to instantly improve your life, and lead to more success in all things!

SETTING THE STAGE

We all set the stage for our lives. The areas of our life that we use most regularly every day, the bedroom, the kitchen, the car, the office, the closet, or even just the sock drawer, are all small stages that we use to perform our daily functions. It is up to us whether those stages are cluttered, chaotic, filled with distractions and unnecessary items. They don’t have to be! We can instead create a stage of lightness, of clean, creative energy that inspires us! In order to move smoothly throughout our day ,with less friction, less delay and less frustration, in order to produce more positive interactions with everything around us, we must first clear the stage, in order to set it properly.

STEP ONE: EMPT Y

The first step is the most work intensive, because it involves rolling up your sleeves and plunging into the fray. But this step is also the most cathartic, and can be fun! Pick a time of day when no one else is home. Or, if you feel confident that you will NOT BE INTERRUPTED by anyone, then find a time to spend at least 2 HOURS this first time around, so there is no rush, and no panic to “finish” before a deadline of some kind. This can possibly jeopardize the whole endeavor by making you feel defeated before you even begin. So shake off that attitude, instead wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, just in case, turn up some music (I like Fleetwood Mac, the Black Keys and maybe a little Moby thrown in) and dig in!

--MAKE PILES-- Piles first, bags and boxes later. The first step of emptying needs to move quickly along, with no time spent bagging and boxing. This step simply involves grabbing an item, giving it a think, and throwing it on a pile. Keep the rhythm going, make large piles, with clear spaces in-between so there is no doubt as to what goes where.

PILE ONE: GOODWILL Just start grabbing things out of the closet. Whether it’s a pair of boots, an umbrella, or an old domino set, pick it up and think quickly how often you use it. If you don’t use it often, is it a specialty item that you DO ACTUALLY USE at least once a year? If you use it less than once a year, put it in the Goodwill pile. You won’t miss it. If it is something you will use within a year and would like to keep put it in

PILE TWO: IMMEDIATE STORAGE I have things like snow boots, sleeping bags, photo albums and out-of-season clothing here. All those things I’m not using NOW, but WILL use. Important: these are not things I MIGHT use, that is how hoarding begins. Only things you are certain you will use within a year, or sooner.

PILE THREE: THINGS FOR OTHER PARTS OF THE HOUSE Here is where you permanently divest your closet of anything not clothes-related. Do not keep your towels in your closet, or your sheets, or your old curtain rods. These things do not belong in your wardrobe, and need to go where they are used. Clear the stage so you can use every available inch in there to your advantage!

PILE FOUR: CLOSET KEEPERS!!! (cue applause!) Favorite pile. These are the items you will put back in the closet, and be able to see and use and enjoy at the end of the process. I will list some guidelines to use in choosing what becomes a closet keeper following this section.

PILE FIVE: RECYCLE/TRASH I love this pile as well, because it is amazing how much goes there, and how much lighter things feel once it is gone! Instant magic. Recycle old papers that are no longer necessary, old shoes with holes or tears, old tees that are stained and stretched, old containers that are dirty and shabby. Anything that does not feel relevant or fresh, consider disposing of. Ahhh! That feeling is your soul lifting with the release of that clutter!

A WORD ON CLOTHES HANGERS: I suggest using only one kind of hanger, or if necessary, only a combination of these kinds: wood, clear plastic, or padded. Do not use the colored plastic hangers or wire hangers, or anything that is flimsy and mismatched. When you use the same kind of hanger the clothes hang better together, allowing for greater use of space, and easier access. Also, the beauty and symmetry of a consistent hanger style is fresh and uplifting to look at. Don’t underestimate the power of that! For your eye to fall upon a sleek row of tidy, appropriate clothing options first thing in the morning is WONDERFUL! It is how we change frustration for satisfaction, negativity to positivity, and generate joy!

ONCE YOUR CLOSET IS TOTALLY EMPTY:

Bundle your piles, bagging the Goodwill items and taking the immediately out to either the car or the garage, tossing out the recycling and trash pile, and redistributing the things that go elsewhere. When only the closet keeper pile is left, step back and imagine.

Does your closet have shelves? Perhaps finer shoes that you’d like to see and keep off of the ground could go there.
Does your closet have drawers, cubbies or bins? Perhaps sweaters that are too heavy to hang could be folded in there. Or large scarves could go there to be grabbed when necessary and not bulk up the hanger area.

I have the world’s smallest closet. It’s one of those 6’x4’ spaces one usually only uses for coats, or linen. But it’s where I have to cram all of my treasures, and so I really try to make the most of it. For my closet, I bought:
A shoe holder: there are many choices of styles, whatever you choose, make sure it is sturdy. Weak, cheap shoe holders wobble and fall apart, adding more clutter and bad vibes to your closet. You can find good, matching sets of closet organzers at Target and Ikea. Invest in a few of these items, and see how much they improve your space!
3 matching bins for the shelves: these hold everything from sweaters to scarves to purses, keeping things sleek and simple, not jumbled and confusing.

ON CLOTHES PLACEMENT: For ease of access and choice, place things less worn to the back or side of the closet. For example, my lovely velvet blazer I wore over the holidays, and will probably wear again this spring over a light tank with jeans to drinks with the girls, is off to the right of my closet, not in the middle. Clothes that you wear all the time should be up front and center. You might arrange them by item, tops together, skirts, etc, or by outfits and coordinating items. I like this approach because it takes the thinking out of it, allowing for more inspiration. For example hanging that black silk drape neck tank next to the cardigan you’d like to wear it with, just makes things easier when you haven’t had your coffee yet!

When you’ve hung everything up, rolled all the sweaters and stowed them away in the bins, arranged your favorite shoes in place, take a breath.

Step back again and look at the beauty you’ve already created! A fresh, organized space full of only relevant items creates some very good vibes!

Now, for icing on the closet cake, consider a small (!) amount of decoration. Perhaps something as simple as a cut out picture from a magazine of something you love, tacked to the wall. Or get a little more sophisticated and hang a small (!) framed picture in there, of whatever inspires you. I like to have a very small corkboard next to my closet that I fill with inspirational pictures of clothes and colors. The corkboard keeps it all in a tidy shape, with clean edges!

Instead of a cluttered place of overwhelming chaos, your closet can become a fresh, inspiring place of possibilities. Take the time to clear your mind and your afternoon to clear your closet and improve your life. Enjoy the bright, clean and welcoming energy of your new space. You’ll start your day with a good feeling, and you’ll carry that along with you for others to enjoy!

Skinny Recipes for Skinny Jeans!

The truth is, you don’t have to be skinny to wear skinny jeans. Take me, for example. I am a size 8-12 depending on who I’m wearing, and I wear skinny jeans all the time. I just wear them with tunics, swingy open cardigans, and dolman tees. However, skinny or not, I like to FEEL that way. And honestly, after I made some of these recipes part of my regular menu, I not only FELT skinny, but LOOKED GREAT! After I went mostly vegetarian and even mostly vegan, I lost 15 pounds, my skin cleared up, and the bags went away under my eyes! Also, I haven’t had a cold in three years!

I’m here to tell you that eating better is easy. Don’t pressure yourself to change everything all at once. Start with one recipe and go from there. Try to add one healthy (and delicious, mind you!) meal to your menu every day, and then see how you feel in a week. When you notice that you are sleeping better, feeling better and looking better, you might just be motivated to include more! You might keep making these easy, healthy, vibrant, lo-cal meals and snacks until you become so beautiful and overjoyed by your energy and youthful appearance, you might just write your own inspirational column!

Let’s get right to the food, shall we?

I just made this salad for the first time the other night, and it’s now on permanent rotation. It is a filling powerhouse of a salad with bright, savory, satisfying flavor. This is the perfect lunch with crusty bread, or a dinner side with a simple soup or rice dish.

QUINOA SALAD

1 c water ˝ c black, red, or white quinoa (I used white) ˝ c sliced almonds (I bought roasted, unsalted almonds in bulk and chopped them myself) 4 cups baby spinach leaves ľ c crumbled feta cheese Ľ c thinly sliced red onion ˝ can corn 3 Tablespoons red wine vinegar 4 teaspoons honey (you can use agave, too) 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard Salt and pepper

In a small saucepan, bring the water and quinoa to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, cover and cook until the water is absorbed and the quinoa has softened, about 10-12 minutes. Turn the heat off and leave the covered saucepan on the burner for an additional 4 minutes. Remove the lid and fluff the quinoa with a fork. Set aside to cool. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spread the almonds on a baking sheet and toast in the oven until they are fragrant and lightly browned, about 5-7 minutes. To a large bowl add the spinach, feta, onion, quinoa, corn and toasted almonds. In a small bowl whisk together the vinegar, oil, honey, and mustard. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Drizzle the dressing over the salad, toss well, and serve immediately! YUM!

Calories per serving: 221 6.1 grams protein 2 grams fiber

Now here is the most delicious, healthful, addicting lentil soup you have ever tasted from one of my favorite recipe books ever, “ Skinny Bitch in the Kitch ”. Do yourself a huge favor and read the first book “ Skinny Bitch ” by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin while eating this soup. These girls tell it like it is, people, and it’s an hilarious, entertaining read. It also has up-to-the-minute, latest scientific research health information, (real stuff you can trust,not "studies" paid for by the corn syrup industry!), and delivered in an upbeat, no-nonsense manner. It’s an awesome book! With awesome recipes like this one.

LENTIL VEGETABLE SOUP

Makes 8 cups which you’ll eat in two sittings. And feel like a superhero after.

1 Tablespoon olive oil, or coconut oil ˝ red bell pepper, cut into ˝ inch dice ˝ yellow bell pepper, cut into ˝ inch dice ˝ onion, cut into ˝ inch dice 1 zucchini, quartered length-wise and cut into ˝ inch slices 1 yellow squash, quartered length-wise and cut into ˝ inch slices 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon salt ˝ teaspoon pepper ˝ teaspoon dried marjoram ˝ teaspoon dried thyme 1/8 teaspoon cayenne powder 6 cups vegetable stock (my favorite, hands-down is “No-Chicken Broth” from Imagin. The best stock in the world!) 1 ˝ c lentils 1 Tablespoon soy sauce 1 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes (with juices)

Heat oil in a large stock pot over medium heat. Add the red bell pepper, yellow bell pepper, and onion and c ook, stirring occasionally for 4 minutes. Add the zucchini, yellow squash, garlic, salt, pepper, marjoram, thyme, and cayenne, and cook, stirring occasionally, for 2 minutes. Stir in stock, lentils, and soy sauce. Increase the heat to high, bring to a boil, and reduce to a simmer. Cook until the lentils are tender, about 30 minutes. Add the tomatoes, stirring until they are heated through.

Now here is a special treat! I used to be a tuna salad freak. I really loved my tuna-melts! To me, there is nothing quite so delicious as a good tuna sandwhich with chips, and when I gave up meat, I missed my tuna big-time! BUT our dear gal pals at Skinny Bitch have once again saved the day with this fabulous faux tuna salad recipe that stands head-and-shoulders above any competitors. My husband and I like to call it “Tuno”. Give this delicious, healthful recipe a try and enjoy the crisp, ultra-fresh flavor on a piece of toasty bread with tomato and lettuce. Go ahead and have some chips with it! (Corn chips are best, and try to limit to one small handful) Get crazy and try some of the new DELICIOUS cheese alternative “Daiya”, (available shredded in most grocery stores) for an amazing “Tuno” melt!

TUNO SALAD SANDWICH

Makes 3 or 4 sandwiches

2 c finely shredded parsnip (shred on the smallest or second-smallest holes on your cheese shredder) 1 celery stalk, finely diced Ľ small red or white onion, finely diced 1 lemon ˝ c vegan mayonaise (my favorite is “Nayonaise”, delicious!) 2 Tablespoons sweet pickle relish 1 Tablespoon nutritional yeast Salt

In a large bowl combine parsnip, celery, and onion. Zest, then halve the lemon. Add the lemon zest and juice from one half to the mixture, along with the mayonnaise, relish, yeast, and salt, stirring to combine. Spread this mixture on a hearty piece of whole-grain bread (like Dave’s!) and add a thin slice of tomato and crunchy lettuce. You can even make a Panini out of it by adding Daiya cheese (which melts amazingly well) and popping it in a skillet. So good!

Alright, let’s get into dinner territory. Here is one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITE RECIPES has impressed every guest who’s eaten it, as well as my 13-year old daughter! Not only that, it’s one of the easiest recipes I’ve ever made.

PORTABELLO MUSHROOM BAKE

˝ c almonds Ľ c olive oil Ľ c Braggs (an amino acid sauce, available near the soy sauce, delicious to cook with!) Ľ c - ˝ c water 2 Tablespoons balsamic vinegar 3 cloves garlic, roughly chopped 1 tsp dried rosemary 1 tsp dried oregano 4 large Portobello mushrooms, stems removed 1 medium onion, sliced

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a blender or food processor, blend the almonds until powdered. Add oil, Braggs, water, vinegar, garlic, rosemary, and oregano, and blend until well combined. In a large baking dish, place the mushrooms upside down and top with onions. Pour sauce over top and bake for 20-25 minutes. Makes 2-4 servings. We like to serve this with a small side of rice and a salad.

MUSHROOM, LEEK, AND WHITE BEAN PIE

1 lb. cremini mushrooms 2 Tablespoons olive oil 3 c thickly sliced leeks (white and green parts) 3 garlic cloves, chopped Heaping Tablespoon chopped fresh thyme Black pepper 1 c shelled walnuts 1 15 oz. can cannelloni beans, drained and rinsed 1-2 Tablespoons water 2 Tablespoons corn starch ľ teaspoon salt Extra few sprigs of thyme to decorate

1 nine-inch pie crust, whole wheat! (see my own recipe, following pie instructions)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roughly chop mushrooms. Preheat a large, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat. Saute the leeks in the olive oil for about 3 minutes. Add the mushrooms and saute for about 7 minutes more, until the moisture has released and they’re nice and soft. Add the garlic, thyme, and pepper, saute for antoher minute, then remove from heat. Your oven should be preheated by now, so poke the bottom of the pie crust with a fork about five times to prevent it from puffing up, then bake for 10 minutes and remove from oven. Now, prepare the filling. Pulse the walnuts in a food processor until fine crumbs form. Add the beans and a tablespoon of water and blend. If the beans aren’t blending easily, add another tablespoon of water. Add the cornstarch and salt. Blend until the cornstarch isn’t visible. Add the leek mixture to the food processor. Use a spoon to mix it into the beans before you start processing. You’re going to be pulsing the mixture up but not completely blending it in, so it’s important to incorporate it beforehand. Now pulse a few times, so that the leeks and mushrooms are still visible, but chopped into small bits. Soon the filling into the pre-baked crust, smoothing the top with the back of a spoon. Press the reserved mushroom slices into the perimeter of the pie and press a few sprigs of thyme down the center. Bake for 40 minutes. Let cool for at least 30 minutes before serving. This quiche-like pie tastes great at room temperature!

And finally, some yummy sweet muffins to curb that sweet-tooth!

COFFEE CHIP MUFFINS

1 c almond milk (or your favorite non-dairy milk) 1 heaping Tablespoon instant coffee crystals (actually, I just brewed a 1/4 cup of REALLY REALLY strong coffee and used that instead!) 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar 2 c all-purpose flour ( I use whole wheat) ˝ c organic cane sugar (don’t use processed sugar! Very bad for you, and totally unnecessary with all of the natural sweeteners available) 1 Tablespoon baking powder ˝ teaspoon salt ˝ c canola oil 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract ˝ c organic chocolate chips (or vegan choco chips!)

Preheat oven to 367 degrees. Lightly grease a muffin tin. In a large measuring cup, measure out ˝ c of the milk. Stir in the coffee or coffee crystals, and mix. Stir in rest of milk and the vinegar and set aside. In a large mxiing bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Make a well in the center and add the milk mixture, oil, and vanilla. Mix together until the batter is just moistened, being careful not to over mix. Fold in the chocolate chips. Drop batter into the muffin tin, filling each well about three-quarters full. Bake for 22-26 minutes, until a knife or toothpick comes out clean. Let cool a bit until you can remove the muffins and transfer them to a plate or cooling rack to cool the rest of the way. Great breakfast, snacks, or road trip food!

So those are just a few of the many recipes I’ve tried and loved that are healthy, lo-cal, fiber-full and delicious. I really do mean it when I say changing your eating habits are easy. I used to be a meat-eating, dairy-loving, ice-cream fanatic, doughnut enthusiast. And guess what, I still eat all those things….just with new, healthy ingredients! I eat all the chicken recipes I want, with fake chicken. I eat all the ice-cream I want, just non-dairy. I eat doughnuts (in moderation), that are made with organic flours, natural sugars, and no eggs! They rock, by the way!

So eating these filling, delicious recipes I’m totally satisfied, and I feel great in my skinny jeans. The only things I’m deprived of are an extra 15 pounds, acne, puffy eyes, joint pain, and irritability. I don’t mind that! If you read two books about nutrition read “Skinny Bitch” for sure, but also try Alicia Silverstone’s AMAZING book "The Kind Diet". She shares her journey from omnivore to culinary superhero and makes you feel like you can do it too! But no pressure, it’s all about easing in to a new lifestyle. Eating better is not only about losing weight, but become also about tuning in to your real self. As Alicia writes,

“As I aligned more with nature and the seasons, I aligned more with myself. Instead of constantly relying on people around me for direction, I felt I was on my own journey and I was beginning to sense--from inside of me--each next right step.”

A short list of things you need to make sure reside in your closet...

Every wonderful closet has to start with a good solid foundation. The list of elementary and foundational items that will help tie every outfit together nice and tidy. Here's the a short list of things you need to make sure reside in your closet, replenish when they get drab, and always have handy!

WHITE & BLACK TANKS. We are partial to the HARD TAIL supima cotton stretch, bra-friendly tanks. The fabric has some weight to it, and is crazy soft, the scoop is modest enough to be appropriate everywhere, and it washes like a dream.

BLACK LEGGINGS. You need at least 2-3 pairs because you'll grab these again and again…and AGAIN. We vote for both the Hard Tail and the TEES BY TINA.

Packing for Any Trip: Stress-free and Glamorous travel!

Packing for a trip? Lucky you!

So you’re leaving town, hitting the road, blowing this crazy pop stand, and you’re already stalled, thinking of what to pack? No worries! If you just relax, take a deep breath and follow my handy packing tips, there is no reason your vacation can’t start right now! And if it’s not a vacation you’re packing for, these tips can also turn a routine business trip into something more like a vacation, and it all starts with how you pack!

STEP ONE: Get out a pen and paper. Not your blackberry, or ipad. You want a good old-fashioned hard copy of your list, so you can check it off, wrinkle it, cross it out, throw it on the bed, put it near the underwear drawer, etc. You need something immediate and not distracting like a computer to make your list.

STEP TWO: Consider how many days will you be gone? Four days? Five? Ten? You can usually figure on the total outfits being one per day up to five days, then only two more. So you can pack for any trip in 7 or less outfits. Usually less than five!
Not many people want to pay the outrageous fees charged by the airlines for checked luggage. Gone are the days when you could easily bring three or four suitcases on a trip for FREE, and really, do you want all that luggage alone to slow you down? Too many choices are worse than not enough!
These days most people are packing everything in a carry-on-sized piece of luggage. And happily, they make beautiful, roomy carry-on-sized suitcases these days, so splurge and buy one. Don’t bother with the “suitcase sets” of two or four pieces that seem like such a bargain! They include a large non-carry-on size, and a worthless tiny messenger bag size, and a cheap carry-on size that will fray and look beaten after two trips. I just bought a single, carry-on sized suitcase at Target for 99.00. It is a lovely dark blue, swivels, rolls easily, and has a really roomy interior! I can fit a week’s worth of clothes into that bad boy!

STEP THREE: Where are you going? What is the weather like there? What will you be doing while you’re there? Write down the answers, and then choose your clothes based on the following guidelines:

Jeans. Jeans have become a staple fashion choice for any age. I highly recommend jeans for the better part of your every day wardrobe, and certainly for traveling, but THEY MUST BE THE RIGHT JEAN . Extremely important! For a fool-proof, sophisticated but casual and comfortable jean, pick dark wash, stretch denim. A simple boot cut or straight leg jean will suit for most tops, or you could try a trouser jean, or a simple boyfriend fit. But not too much distressing or whiskering, and no embellishments! You want the jeans you bring to go with everything, no fuss. For a five day trip, you can get away with two pairs of jeans. More than that will crowd your suitcase. I almost always travel with dark wash stretch denim because it looks great no matter what, goes with everything, and is comfortable to wear on the plane. (If you wear one pair of jeans that leaves only one to put in your suitcase!)

Tops. I like to look grown-up, chic, and comfortable when I travel. No fleece. No clogs. No muffin top. I like to wear a simple, sleek top that doesn’t cling (tunics are great to travel in!) with dark jeans on the plane, usually topped by a soft, belted cardigan for snugly warmth in a drafty airport. Also on the plane….I always wear slip-on shoes, or zip-up boots with socks. Do not wear sandals, unless it is the middle of summer and they are really comfortable, cute sandals. Although most US travelers do not seem to care if they are seen wearing pajamas in an airport, or yoga pants and flip flops, traveling does require a little decorum, and showing off your toes is not really necessary. So choose some adorable slip-on loafers, or ballet flats, or if you don’t want to walk with bare feet through security (yuck!), wear the boots with socks. Warm, cute, and appropriate!

More on tops: You can usually be a little more liberal in choosing the number of tops to pack, because they compact better than jeans and you can fit more in. I like to bring choices of layers along on a trip, because you never know when the Santa Ana winds are going to pick up, or an un-seasonal rain shower might fall. Remember, Disneyland can get pretty cold at night, even in the summer! So pack tops that go with each other. If you think you’ll be going out to dinner, pack a blousey top of rayon, poly, or a washable silk blend, which is a day or night fabric. If you stick to un-trendy solids, you can dress them up with different accessories! My last trip to California I packed a black rayon tunic that

1. I wore on the plane (with dark wide-leg jeans, brown heeled boots, a soft scarf and large gold earrings).

2. I wore shopping in Palm Springs (over dark skinny jeans and ballet flats, hair in a bun, dark shades, silver earrings).

3. I wore to dinner (over same skinny jeans with heels, and long stone pendant). That’s pretty good for one top!

Suggestions for tops to pack, depending on where you’re going and what time of year:

Light, blousey tops of washable silk or rayon. These tops practically disappear in your suitcase, the fabric is so light. They shake out and will loose any wrinkles when lightly steamed in the bathroom, or when thrown into a cool dryer, and can be warmed up and dressed down with sweaters and jackets.

Light cardigan or two in neutral colors. You might like the look of that leopard-print cardigan, but resist packing it. You’ll be much happier with the navy blue or charcoal grey cardigan when you’re looking for something to wear to the museum. That same solid cardigan can be worn to dinner over a dress, too! Make sure the sweaters you do pack are of good quality, no pills, no unraveled threads.

Tee-shirts. Only pack a couple of these, unless your entire trip is spent on the beach. A good, white v-neck tee (Eileen Fisher makes some wonderful ones!) will always come in handy, with jeans, with a skirt, or shorts, under any cardi, with any accessory. Grey tees are also a good choice, being a sophisticated neutral that can be dressed up or down. Of course a black tee is always worth the space in the suitcase. Be judicious in your choice of stripes and colors, only picking those that are totally appropriate for your destination, and those that really look good on you!

Sweaters. A must, but also a possible packing pitfall because of their bulk! One must choose their sweaters wisely, to avoid over packing. Consider bringing, A light, black cardigan . Doesn’t sound sexy, but will be your travel workhorse from the plane, to shopping, to driving, to dinner, and all activities in-between. A fine, light black cardigan is a great choice. A soft, chunky thigh-length cardigan in a neutral shade, belted. This piece will be your travel coat, luncheon layer, and evening wrap. One good-quality, chunky piece in a neutral color (ivory, grey, camel, brown, navy) can be worn on the plane, out shopping, on the restaurant patio.

Pants. I don’t pack many pants, because I usually wear dark denim, however if I did need an alternative to jeans I would pack only one pair of pants. Choose a pair that goes with at least two of your tops. I like black trousers in a nice heavyweight twill or light wool blend. Unless I’m off to the Bahamas, a sturdy dark pant looks most flattering and appropriate, anywhere you go. Cropped black trousers look great with sweaters, tees, flats, and jackets, and keep a preppy sophistication in your look. It’s nice to not look like the cliché American when traveling, with loud pants and ugly shoes, and if you’re visiting museums or churches, it’s nice to show respect with a grown-up wardrobe!

Coats. Be careful here, coats are the bulkiest item to travel with. I only bring one coat, and none if I can get away with it. I like a long, soft cardigan instead of a coat, but if it’s too cold or wet, then bring a good, warm coat on the plane. There’s no way you’ll stuff a coat into your carry on suitcase, so either splurge on a check-in, or wear it on the plane. Once again, neutrals please! A crazy print or color will just look cheap when you’re traveling, and you’ll get tired of it before the trip is over.

Dresses. I do love a dress. Mostly for day wear. A one-piece outfit is a space-saver too. I choose looser-fitting day dresses in cotton, denim, or the right jersey. Shirt dresses are a chic, comfortable day outfit, dressed down with flats and flat sandals. Watch out for TOO SHORT HEMS. It is an epidemic in the fashion industry, the high hem length. For ordinary people though, not cute on anyone over 25, and really, not on most under! Fortunately, there is a slight change with cute knee-lengths appearing, some mid-calf lengths and of course the maxi. Consider letting down the hem on your dress, if possible. It’s hard to make it too long, and a too-short hem is embarrassing when you’re leaning over for anything. And you lean a lot when you travel! Once your thighs are covered, however, a day dress is a swingy, cool piece to wear almost anywhere.

Skirts. A skirt can be like a jean, a go-to separate for any top. In my opinion skirts are for most people more flattering than shorts. An a-line skirt eliminates any thigh issues immediately, and most bum issues as well. In a neutral color or quiet print this can be the perfect summer bottom with tees and sweaters, flats and sandals. One skirt ought to do it, unless you’re very skirt friendly, then just two.

Shoes. Like coats, shoes can be the thing that fill up a suitcase. Yet it’s nearly impossible to get away with only one pair! Even two is inadequate on many trips. What to do? First, choose the shoe you’ll travel in . The ones you’ll wear on the plane. I do usually pick the most substantial pair, to avoid having to pack them. If this works with the outfit I have in mind, then that’s one pair. Also, I usually need a lighter pair, for walking. Comfy ballet flats or loafers that go with everything are always packed in my suitcase. I mean really comfy, with sleek rubber heels and cushions. My feet need to be comfortable when I travel, it’s a must! Anyone with back issues knows what I’m talking about. But we must also be cute, ladies! It is essential to the emotional well-being of our journey! So, get yourself some cushy black ballet flats, no embellishments. Or, camel-colored are great. Brown. I have some dark wine-colored ones that go with nearly everything. Ok, that’s two pair. What if you like to work out? Athletic shoes are clunky monsters! (And we are NOT wearing them on the plane!!!) So…if you must work out, pack the lightest shoe possible for it. If you’re a runner, you’ll have to pack whatever shoe you need. So, either elbow your shoes into your suitcase, or leave them to the side to a special appearance in my “Secret Carryon Space” I will describe later. If you don’t run, maybe you can get away with packing a lightweight, slip on sneaker , or some other less bulky shoe to wear to the gym.

Dress shoes. Lately, I’ve avoided packing dress shoes by making my comfy ballet flats double as dress shoes. They do look pretty with my dinner dress! If, however you need to have a heel, or want to sex it up a bit on vacation, you’ll have to pack another pair of shoes. Hopefully, you aren’t packing athletic shoes AND dress shoes. If you aren’t then it’s doable, if you are, well, I hope your shoes are small. If you must pack dress shoes, see if they can’t be the kind that will go with one other outfit as well. I have a cute wood-heeled sandal for instance that would look great with a dress, or jeans. The heel is low enough to be comfortable for an afternoon of strolling.

Flip Flops and Slippers. Thank goodness flip flops and slippers don’t take up very much room, because they are a god send! Only one pair each, mind you, and make sure they’re as flat as possible--no wedge-heeled flip flops if you can help it! A clean, sleek pair of black flip flops (again, no embellishments, sequins, etc) and a soft, clean pair of slippers will come in handy from the hotel room to the pool, to your in-law’s kitchen. Slide these babies on their sides along the edge of your suitcase.

Ok. So now the actual packing. The putting-in of the articles. I start with large items like jeans and shoes. I often roll the jeans and put them in the deep corners. The shoes, lined in a yin-yang postion, squish in next. Any thicker item like a sweater or pajama bottoms layers in next, tees, and on top the rayon or silkier pieces, dresses, etc. Socks, bras, undies all layered in around the sides. Also in the suitcase, a hair dryer if necessary, and straightening iron, curling iron, etc. Keep this to a minimum. Any chargers, for phone, ipad, laptop, camera, etc. cords coiled neatly stashed in corners or in netting, easily identifiable so the security people don’t think they are hidden bomb fuses and rifle through everything.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE:

On my frame of mind: One of the reasons my vacations always start with packing is because I use a trip, whether for business or pleasure, as an excuse to present THE BEST POSSIBLE ME. When you’re on the road, away from your house and regular duties, it is possible to start the trip with a clean slate, bringing along only your favorite things. When you're living light, and with only the essentials to your personal comfort, it creates a very powerful zen-like serenity that you take with you wherever you go. I believe this centered, confidant and relaxed feeling attracts a smoother, more beautiful experience, and it certainly cuts down on stress! Even with a plane delay, a bumped seat, or a bad rental car, if you're packed properly and you have everything you need at your fingertips, then you are still in control of the situation and can find the beauty in it. Personally, I start every trip with a complete personal grooming session. I pluck, I shave, I paint my toes, exfoliate my skin, and buff my nails. When I have cleaned everything out, and set the stage to start choosing my clothes and accessories, I feel I have created a fresh canvas on which to create my experience. I open my empty suitcase and start filling it with my favorite clothes. I make sure that every piece I choose is of good quality, with no pills, no frays, no stains. When I’m standing in line at security among a lot of other people, or sitting on the plane closely surrounded by others, I don’t want anyone focusing on the hole in my sweater, the rip in my jeans, or the (god-forbid) cracks in my heels! So I take that decidedly un-glamorous possibility entirely out of the equation by only choosing the best of what I have and leaving everything of lesser quality at home. When I’m on the road, it’s reassuring to know that whatever sweater I grab, or jeans I wear, or tee shirt I have, are the cutest and freshest possible. Feeling great means looking great, and this often leads to a great trip!

DIANE’S SECRET CARRY-ON SPACE

I have a secret carry-on tip for getting a little more carry-on space than the airline would like, but without inconveniencing anyone. You are allowed one carry-on-sized suitcase, and one “small personal item”, like a purse or a backpack. My secret is in the definition of “small”. I bought a really rather large tote bag, in black patent leather, that is quite roomy. It doesn’t look that big though, because it is black and fashioned like a purse. It doesn’t scream “Duffle Bag!” and cause the stewardesses to reject it at the door. It is a discreetly huge, purse-styled bag in a dark color, and I sling it across my back as I walk down the plane aisle, with my suitcase in front of me. No one even sees its massive bulk! And then I swing it down into the space between my feet, under the seat in front of me, like a good passenger. While others are freaking out around me over where they an stash their jacket, or having to open their bag to get something out and blocking the aisle, I am quietly and calmly arranging my fashion magazines in front of me, bag stowed.

IN THIS MASSIVE CARRY-ON “PURSE” I HAVE:

All of my toiletries. A make-up bag full of 3oz bottles of cleanser, lotion, shampoo, conditioner.
All of my makeup , with lipstick and powder stashed in smaller purse for easy access (see following), my SMALLER PURSE FOR DAY USE once I arrive at my destination, and of course
my wallet
phone
laptop I can also fit in this wonderful, huge bag
Several fat fashion magazines and
a sweater !
And a large soft scarf which is essential for coziness and comfort in such a small space! (Really a scarf is a MUST to ward off any chill coming from the ventilation system, and to hold up around your cheeks for comfort during turbulence, or to nap in. Or to lightly scent so you are totally surrounded in your own beautiful dream while flying, but not too much for the sake of your fellow passengers.)

If you must, you can also fit your athletic shoes in this bag. You could wrap them together so they don’t flop around separately and squash things.
The smaller purse for day use I mentioned earlier is the purse you will carry throughout your trip. Choose only one, usually again a neutral, but this is an accessory, so a bright color or print or embellishment is appropriate. In this purse I have my wallet, phone, sunglasses, reading glasses, lipstick and powder handy for use. Also my boarding passes.

So, you can see how much extra packing space you get with this “small personal item”! It's really like another entire suitcase, and if you keep it discreet, the stewardesses will never know! Remember to be a good passenger and load your carry-on suitcase into the overhead bin HANDLES IN, WHEELS OUT!

Once aboard, I like to flip through fashion magazines and read articles. I like to order a drink and pretend I’m off to a fabulous photo shoot in London with Kate Moss. Or that I’m a journalist on her way to Milan to cover fashion week. Honestly, it makes flying fun, I’ll tell you! Properly packed, equipped, and with the right mental attitude (and of course that drink!) makes for a very enjoyable, relaxing, and fashionable time!
So, ladies, start your vacation from the very beginning! Find a time alone where you can take out that pen and paper and start your list. Don’t panic, just pour some wine, put on a little music, and have fun with it! Your suitcase is your friend! Your valet! Enjoy the process of picking easy, pretty pieces and feel the satisfaction knowing you’re off to a great start!

I love the focus on food, and the deeply satisfying aspect of dining with people you love. I spend the whole month of November forcing my kids to write a "thankful" each day (we read them all at the end of the month), and I personally love the ritual of focusing in on the things you are truly grateful, however small.

Yes, yes this is a blog post about her amazing sweater. Because it's that good. I know you probably think I'm just saying that because I'm supposed to, but it really is true! I know exactly what you're feeling and thinking because when the Eileen Fisher rep told me how amazing it was, and it was "on every order" and "you'll be sad if you miss out on this", I kind of rolled my eyes and shrugged it off. But then I felt it in person, and let me tell you, you will be sad if you miss out on this. The Eileen Fisher Cashmere Silk Boucle Bliss is something you need . Its the hug you deserve after the last year+ of crazy. Its the happiness you need in your life. Its the treat you give to yourself to get thru all the family gatherings with the in laws in the coming months. Its your new favorite sweater. I didn't know cashmere needed to be any softer, and then silk got added into the mix, and OMG! It is blissful, to say the least. The color is perfection, too. First of all, the name is just pretty. Delphine. I like that. Second, its the perfect color/neutral. Not too plain, not to punchy. It almost has an ethereal glow to it, and brings to much light to your face. Wear it as a neutral, or wear it as the color in your outfit, you can't go wrong!

But really, this shipment is beautiful. As we were pulling it out of the box, we were wowed more and more with each style. For the first time, in a long time, things felt "normal" in the world. Unpacking beautiful cashmere and boiled wool from Eileen Fisher, on a wonderful fall day, things just felt right. I'm very excited for this season, and all the lovely things to come. Of course we have many more sweaters and fall fashions to come, but this one is one of the more special ones. ;) I mean, I'm pretty sure the Cozy Wool Knit Knee Length Boucle Jacket is the jacket all other jackets wish they could be. I'm excited to wear these pieces as much as possible. Elevate the everyday, and make the most of every second. I used to save special pieces for special occasions, but as a dear customer always says, "everyday is a special occasion", and I think that is a perfectly good reason to wear cashmere silk, great fitting pants, and a killer jacket while you knock out your to do list around town IN STYLE.

So cheers to Eileen Fisher, and cheers to fall! It's going to be good!

The Speed of Time

I had a thought today as I looked at my calendar thru the end of the year, and was filling in one thing after another, that time was just speeding by. It's mid September, yet it feels like it's going to be January in a blink of an eye. It's not like that for Romeo. He's 10, and each day seems to last forever, and when he has to wait for something (like Christmas), a month feels like it might as well be a year. I remember days feeling like forever when I was little too. The sensation that summer was a lifetime of time, a weekend stretched on forever.

So it made me wonder, what is it about getting older that makes time feel like it goes faster? Is it that we are busier? Is it that everything is no longer "new"? I decided to do a little digging, because I'm not down with this warp speed time thing. Here's what I found out. In a Harvard University article , scientists postulate that in fact time DOES speed up as you age. "...Bejan posits that slower processing times result in us perceiving fewer ‘frames-per-second’ – more actual time passes between the perception of each new mental image. This is what leads to time passing more rapidly.When we are young, each second of actual time is packed with many more mental images. Like a slow-motion camera that captures thousands of images per second, time appears to pass more slowly." Basically, we process things slower, whereas when we were little our brains were working at lightening speed.

As if I didn't need more evidence that I've officially crossed the 50 year old mark, now there is a scientific reason behind why my days feel like minutes, and it's that my brain is working slower. Not even sure how to wrap my brain around that, it's taking me too long AND I'm getting too depressed.

So is there hope? I googled that question too. Apparently meditation and mindfulness is the key. Breathing techniques help, focusing on little things helps too. The other advice was to expose yourself to as many NEW things and experiences as possible. This makes a lot of sense to me, because one thing I know is that as you get older your days can take on a very structured, regulated and monotonous tone. You pick the kids up at the same time, you do the house chores the same way, you eat the same foods. Basically you have your ruts and you stick to them.

So here's to getting out of ruts, doing new things, being mindful, and slowing down so that we can hold onto time, and literally make it slow down.

Ruana Explained

Here's the truth. We've been carrying the Ruana cashmere poncho/wrap for years now. Like a lot of years. When you are in retail, sometimes that can translate to "style overload". Where you just get sick of something because you've seen it so much. I think Amanda might say that. I definitely would say that. But here's the annoying thing, I STILL go to grab my Ruanas ALL the time--every year. So there you go. It's as useful in my wardrobe as it was 5 years ago when we first got it in. If anything, I've come to rely on it more because now I see the versatility tried and true.

Basically, what I'm saying is that as annoyed as I want to be with this style that has literally been in my retail vision non-stop for five years, I can't help but still love it, and each year I want another cool color. I have all the basic colors by now which always come in handy, but I will throw on boyfriend jeans, a white tank, and a Ruana in a pop color for fun. Throw on a tangle of necklaces and it could be a uniform for me. I wash these on delicate and let it dry on a rack. The cashmere stays soft and it's easy.

Ode to Margaret

I've been wearing Margaret O'Leary for probably close to 25 years. Which is pretty amazing to be honest, because I don't think I've loved anything except my husband for that long. I remember buying a Margaret sweater when I lived in Seattle, I was barely 26 years old, just married, no kids. She had a little store near Pike's market that sold her sweaters, and they were the chunky knit, authentic looking Irish cardigans that I will always identify with her.

Of course over the years she's grown, become more refined, fancier maybe, but all without losing her roots. The fact that she is still in the industry after all these years itself is a testament to the quality of her work, and to the timelessness of her designs. I have sweaters that have held up for so long that I ended up giving them away simply because there is a point after 10 or so years that you just need something new because you've worn the sweater SO many times no one wants to see you in it again.

I know there are some people that were really upset with her decision to have some of her line produced in China. I think you have to remember though, she's an international person. She's Irish, and yes, she's been in the U.S. forever, but she's got a global mindset. What's most important to her is the working conditions, the fair labor aspect, and above all, the quality. You can protect those things anywhere in the world, and I think she does that.

Her pieces are spendy, but I don't think I've ever regretted making the investment, even when the investment felt huge (like at 26 when a the reality of school loans were hitting). Her pieces are indulges, but the best kind of indulgences because they are useful, last forever, and make you happy.

Basically, I love you Margaret, and I thank you for your years of fabulous work because they have contributed to my happy closet in all the best ways!

LOVE a good sale!

It's hard to beat a good sale. I mean, everyone loves a deal! Some more than others, but I haven't met anyone who will turn down paying less for something they need or want. I have some customers who won't even look at the sale rack, and others who only look at the sale rack - so there are the extremes on both ends of the spectrum, but over all, no one is going to turn down a deal. Personally, I get extra excited when I can get a deal on something I'm buying anyways, even if its just 25 cents at the grocery store on an avocado, it feels super good!

Lately, I've been totally hooked on the "just for you" app thru our grocery store Albertsons. It does specific deals for you, based on the things you buy and how you shop. And then as you spend more and more money, you can collect rewards and get products for free. Its like collecting tokens at the arcade! They have different categories, and some things cost more than others, but I love saving up my points, and then picking out free things. A couple of weeks ago I cashed in all of my rewards to get some cheese and ice cream (you know, the must haves) FOR FREE! I also love looking at my receipt when it breaks down how much you saved and what percent that was and all of that. Its a rush! My biggest savings so far was 65% at the beginning of the summer when we only needed a few things, but got our first watermelon of the season, and with my specialized savings, I ended up saving over $15 on this watermelon. That really increased my stats!

Side note, I don't know why the watermelons were so crazy expensive. Maybe it was the first of the season and so there weren't a ton, and they were charging an arm and a leg for them?? I'm not sure. It was seedless, but not even organic. Just your plain old watermelon. I saved $15, but I won't tell you how much I actually did pay. All I will say is that it was incredible, and worth every penny, but I am not planning on spending that much on a watermelon ever again.

Okay, so the ONESIE SALE today - there are some must haves for sure! Some good things got marked down that are totally wearable for now and well into the fall weeks ahead. I love getting things when they first come in (I am currently wearing my Citizens of Humanity Kayla Shirt for the 3rd time this week), but also love a good sale, and even more when its on sale! ;) LV and I always laugh about how some of our most treasured pieces or most complimented items over the years, have been sale finds. Isn't that funny how that works out? I'll wait months and months for something to come in (currently writing orders for Velvet spring right now, and its CUTE! very excited!), and that's fun, and super special, but there is also something really amazing about getting a good deal and loving something even more than you imagined.

And...piggybacking on what LV said yesterday about getting in the gift giving mindset, I love finding things on sale, and stockpiling gifts for people as I see them. That way, I'm not left in a bind, and am not just buying something to have something to give, even if its not perfect. PJ sets are always my go to, but I also have my sights set on a few other pieces. Gotta keep people on their toes! :)

Too early to start buying gifts?

I'm very aware of how annoying I am probably going to sound in this post, so let me preface it with saying I have had MANY years when I haven't put away my flip flops until the end of October, when I haven't shopped for Christmas until after 12/20, and when I have only checked off about 1/2 the people on my list. I get it, sometimes you just can't even wrap your head around it.

However, I've also lived the flip side. Which is the über prepared fall where you nest like crazy, linens are pressed and packed away by 9/15, and enjoyed the "I'm done early" holidays where I'm drinking whisky by the fire on 12/20 with all my wrapping done.

So what I'm saying is that there is no judgment, you are where you are any given year, and in the end the only thing that matters is that you try not to drive yourself nutty. This year however, I'm feeling especially "nesty". I think it's because I also feel easily overwhelmed. I'll blame that on the covid year (because let's face it, we blame everything on covid so it feels appropriate). School started this week, and it's a lot of commotion. I'm very glad the kids get to go back, but I'm also hyper aware of the intensity of the energy of a "regular" schedule. My first thought was, "wow, did I really use to do this?" All the driving and all the coordinating--it's a lot.

So to combat my sense of overwhelmed-mania, I tend to get all crazy OCD, I nest, and I organize. I need the next 4 months to NOT feel out of control, so I project manage like an insane person.

Which all leads me to the question of thinking gifts in September. Truth is, and prepared to be annoyed, I've already started collecting gifts for the fall and holidays (and yes, I actually started in July). I have 3 kids with late fall birthdays (horrible time--it's the worst thing ever to have to do a birthday and then Christmas a month later). Then of course Christmas, which this year will include my inlaws so I want it to be extra special. My father-in-law has been battling cancer and I'm very keenly aware of the brevity of these family holidays together, and I want this one to be extra special.

I know I sound ancient saying this, but you really can't beat a well stocked gift drawer (darn it mother, you were right), and you can't beat spreading the joy of gift giving over several months instead of a fevered one month. Amanda agrees, and she decided to do a Gifting Saturday section, with everything 40% off so it kind of makes it SO easy to grab a few things and tuck them away. HELLOOOO SEPTEMBER!

It's September!! It's here! September has always been one of my favorite months, and as the years go by, I find myself looking forward to it more and more. Especially here in Oregon, I would go as far as to say it's the most popular month. The weather is so beautiful, and with perfect temps in the 70's, it's easy to enjoy the crisp, sunny days and clean air. Plus the leaves start changing colors, and it's absolutely stunning. The farmers market produce is still incredible and going strong, but you get to start switching to more comfort food dishes with all the fresh ingredients. SO good!

How is everyone feeling about August? Hanging on to summer? Ready for fall? Ready for school? I've always loved the going back to school energy. Feel like no one wants to go back to school, but there is something about getting all your supplies ready - at any age. Friday night football games always have such a special feeling, too! So many good things to love!

Fall fashions are getting into full swing, also. YAY! Today we had a great day in the low 70's, and everyone was already wearing their transitional fall pieces, cozy pre fall sweaters and all the brilliant hues of fall. It was so cool to see, and another one of my favorite parts of fall. Really, anytime the seasons change and you get to switch out your wardrobe, it is exciting. Everything feels new again! I love all of my clothes equally - I try not to play favorites. haha. But there is just something about pulling out that first Margaret O'Leary sweater of the season (also, side note, Margaret O'Leary ships today - stay tuned! It should be here soon!).

August was a great month to enjoy summer, but start thinking about fall, easing into fall styles, and planning for a season ahead. But September is here, and it's full on fall to me. I made the most of summer, and while I'm sad to see it go (mostly because I know the rain and cold that's ahead for winter is that much closer), but I'm jumping with both feet into fall, and embracing all that season has to offer.

Completely unrelated, but speaking of fashion...haha...a few weeks ago I hit my 100 workout iFit milestone, and got a free tee shirt as a prize. Never EVER did I think that would be something I would be excited about, let alone wear. All of my old Hard Tail and retired Velvet tees that are too worn to be worn in public are my workout clothes. But now I have this iFit tee, and I'm actually kind of proud of it. :) I do NOT plan on stepping foot outside of the house in it, but I do have fun wearing it around the house and nonchalantly rubbing it in Todd's face. He has recently started running again (not on the treadmill, I don't know what he has against it, but it's like the more I love it, the more he has to hate it), and I can't help but think it is directly related to the amount of times I wear my iFit shirt in a week. It's starting to rub off on him. But what can I say? I'm officially a runner now, and I guess its inspiring to other people (mostly, and limited to, Todd). hahaha. :)

So cheers to September, and the beautiful month ahead of us in so many ways!

Ice Cream for Breakfast

A dear customer came in on Friday, and totally changed my mood for the better. It had been quite a while since I had gotten to see her, and we spent a few minutes catching up (more like venting, ranting, and complaining. MUCH needed). Then we talked about fashion - always a favorite. We're going along, hanging out, shopping, soaking in the nice, pre fall day, and then she tells me, she had ice cream for breakfast. What?! That's allowed?? Why I have I not been doing this?? Not that I felt like this decision needed any justification, but she said she was just tired, in a funk, and had to have ice cream for breakfast. What a good idea! I laughed when she told me she put some granola on it to make it "healthy". hahaha.

Then, today, this woman came in to shop with this HUGE floral arrangement she had gotten at the florist in the market. Like the gigantic ones they always have in the cases on display but I always wonder if they actually ever get purchased because they're so expensive and if I'm shelling that much out on flowers, I want them to be exactly what I want, and put in a custom order. She could hardly see around the flowers as she moved around the store. They were STUNNING! Of course we comment on them, and she said she bought them "just because". She has always wanted a big, dramatic floral arrangement because it just makes her happy, and that's exactly what she did. Today was the day! How awesome is that?

So now I'm inspired. Tomorrow I'm doing something - big or small, doesn't matter. But I'm doing something for me. Maybe ice cream for breakfast. Maybe and over the top floral arrangement. Maybe take out from a fancy restaurant in PJ's at home. I haven't really decided what its going to be, but I have a little time. The world is heavy right now, I know we all feel it. I wish I could give everyone an hug, and a big bowl of ice cream for breakfast and it would all be okay. But unfortunately that won't fix it all. In the meantime, doing something nice for yourself will give you some of the energy and peace to keep going on and the motivation to spread more good to your friends, family, neighbors, and the the world.
